Background of the Study
Emotional intelligence (EI) has emerged as a critical factor in workplace leadership, influencing decision-making, employee relations, and organizational performance. Defined as the ability to perceive, understand, and manage emotions effectively, EI is essential for leaders to navigate complex interpersonal dynamics and foster a positive work environment (Goleman, 2023). Globally, studies have shown that leaders with high EI are more likely to inspire trust, motivate teams, and adapt to challenges, thereby driving organizational success (Mayer & Salovey, 2024).
In Nigeria, the banking sector is characterized by high-pressure environments, demanding strong leadership to sustain performance and employee well-being. Fidelity Bank, a leading financial institution, operates in Adamawa State, a region with unique economic and cultural dynamics. For leaders in Fidelity Bank, emotional intelligence is crucial for managing a diverse workforce, enhancing employee engagement, and achieving organizational goals.
This study investigates the role of emotional intelligence in workplace leadership, focusing on Fidelity Bank in Adamawa State. By examining the relationship between EI and leadership effectiveness, the study aims to provide actionable insights for improving leadership practices in the Nigerian banking sector.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing recognition of emotional intelligence in leadership, its integration into workplace practices remains limited in many Nigerian organizations. Fidelity Bank, operating in the competitive banking industry, faces challenges related to employee motivation, conflict resolution, and leadership adaptability (Okoro & Hassan, 2023). In Adamawa State, these challenges are compounded by regional factors such as socio-economic disparities and cultural diversity, which demand emotionally intelligent leadership.
The lack of emphasis on EI in leadership development programs has resulted in suboptimal team dynamics and employee satisfaction. This study seeks to explore the role of EI in enhancing leadership effectiveness and addressing workplace challenges in Fidelity Bank.
